Management means, in the last analysis, the substitution of thought for brawn and muscle, of knowledge for folkways and superstition, and of cooperation for force. It means the substitution of responsibility for obedience to rank, and of authority of performance for the authority of rank. Whenever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision.
Peter F(erdinand) Drucker

My Boss sucks. (S)he spies on me!

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

I just don’t get it. Grownups complaining that their boss does what they do to their children. “But I only do that to protect my children!”

And so does your boss! And we all know that most bosses consider the business their child right?

Back in 2004 I noted that there is no privacy on the internet.

In 2006 I wrote that 1/4 of companies fired employees because of misuse of e-mail.

In 2007 the German Consulting Group released a study done with 400 German top managers about truth and fiction; 79% said their e-mail contains lies.

And yesterday I read Reading emails is among the most benign erosions of perceived privacy in the corporate world.

Companies have rules; companies explain why e-mail and phone calls are monitored.

Yet, employees still complain.

But it is the companies that have to go to court for wrongful doings of employees.

What do you think?

Who is really unethical here?

Feminine or Masculine That’s the Question

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Or is it?

Sung-Joo Kim (chairman and chief executive of luxury-goods company MCM Worldwide) thinks that a feminine leadership style—one that emphasizes on sensitivity to employees and openness—can give women an advantage as business owners.

Does it make any sense to classify managers into different categories? It would certainly make life easier—but the truth of course is that most managers are a mix of several classifications, several qualities. Some of these qualities are valuable and useful; many of those qualities complement each other and make for a strong leader. Other qualities are less desirable—or sometimes what should be a desirable quality gets misused. And to be honest, there are some qualities that can best be described as out of this world. 1

Shouldn’t effectiveness and the ability to implement a leadership style be the number one criterias for the style one uses in any given situation?
