What is the spirit of… ?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Many will think immediately: Corporate Culture. The fist problem with corporate culture is that of one single definition: They all vary depending on the company in question and on economic consideration—after all, corporate culture is part of a company’s marketing. “Culture” on the other hand is one of the most misunderstood words. The rules you have learned and grown up with change the moment you leave your hometown. And because everything has become part of your nature, often it’s hard to judge how different things have become.

When bad attitude was caused by something within the corporate culture, it’s only a matter of time before other employees develop a bad attitude, too. If a company has no standards to follow, its culture will seem inconsistent from the inside as well as the outside. On the other hand, standards have to reflect the work, the culture, and the people at hand. Sometimes you need to adjust or even change standards. It’s a matter of deciding when change is needed and when the status quo is the best choice. Let’s face it: things change, and if you want to keep pace, you have to change, too.

But when not in a corporation—you can still have culture or that “spirit” that keeps things not only together but also running.

How do you create that spirit?

Quite easy—there has to be a common goal.
“This one step - choosing a goal and sticking to it—changes everything.”
Scott Reed

How many places do you know where complaints about the missing spirit are high—but there is no common goal?

Do you think that a marriage needs to have a common goal to succeed?
