"Frank's skill in asking the right questions is un-mistakable, and is at the core of his leadership philosophy.

The power of these questions cannot be underestimated, especially if you want to lead and not manage."

What is delegation?

Delegation is passing a clearly defined task including the necessary competencies and responsibilities from a superior to a less superior. If used properly motivation, quantity and quality of work can be increased.

Unfortunately, very often the delegated task is not even clearly defined, wouldn’t you agree?

Delegating a task without the needed competencies and responsibilities leads no only to frustration but in most cases to a failure. Many teams suffer from those pseudo-delegated tasks. Haven’t we all been in a meeting where one employee told the other one to do something just to hear: You can’t tell me anything: You are not my boss!

I do not think that a delegated task that is not clearly defined has been delegated with success in mind.

All to often “managers” will also try to pass on accountability along with the responsibility.

Accountability cannot be delegated and should not be delegated, but it seems that those managers that do delegate responsibility with little or no direction usually try to shed themselves of the accountability of that tasks failure, but are more than willing to take credit when it is a success.

Because I value your thoughtful opinions, I encourage you to add them.
