What Good Is A Degree?

Most of us grew up being told how valuable good education and a degree are. But is that still true?
I just talked with a student who will major this coming spring. She told me that she has already gotten used to be asked questions about education which shouldn’t already be asked when someone has an associate’s degree…
Isn’t that like the question: “Are you pregnant?” when the potential employee is male?
Anyway, she just came back from an interview with a fortune 50 company—extremely disappointed. But what really ticked her off was the offer she got: Cleaning crew, starting at $7 an hour.

How in God’s name am I going to pay back any student loan with that kind of income?
Do I really need a degree for that kind of work? Now if they would have offered me to manage the cleaning crew…
How many of those interviewers shouldn’t be interviewing—because they really dislike their job?
What value does an employee has that is put in the wrong position?
Why are so many managers still surprised by high turnover rates?

Most big companies have benefits, including educational reimbursement. Some of the companies have cut back, but others have not. It might well be worth finding out whether the Fortune 50 company will pay for the person’s first Bachelor’s Degree. By the time one factors in the 401k matching contributions, education and training, pension (if applicable), incentive compensation, and other factors, that $7/hour could actually be the equivalent of $14 to $20/hour.
