The lawsuit, filed this week in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, seeks $900,000 in damages from the for-profit service known as Turnitin. The service seeks to root out cheaters by comparing student term papers and essays against a database of more than 22 million student papers as well as online sources and electronic archives of journals. In the process, the student papers are added to the database.
Attorneys for the company and various universities and public school systems, including Fairfax , have concluded that the service doesn’t violate student rights.

One of the McLean High plaintiffs wrote a paper titled “What Lies Beyond the Horizon.” It was submitted to Turnitin with instructions that it not be archived, but it was, the lawsuit says.

Do you believe their claim not to violate copyrights—when they can’t even honor such an easy request?

If a student objected to Turnitin.com’s approach, it seems to me that the student has the option of raising the issue with the instructor, the school, and the school district.
Turnitin.com is doing exactly what the schools are paying the firm to do. It is making sure that students are not copying their papers from other classes or other students.
Is it appropriate for a degree to be awarded or a diploma conferred based on work that was completed by someone other than the student?
