too good?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Yesterday I talked with a deeply disappointed student. She has to re-do her term-paper. Why? Because what she did is too good. Her professor told her she will get zero points if she doesn’t do it again. And it must be worst than the original one.

Unbelievable!

What signal is this “teacher” sending? One that mediocrity rules, right?

Do companies really need more employees who will not even try to give their best—because their “teachers” already took care of destroying that habit…

What are you going to tell that student? Continue writing good papers and fail—or get mediocre and passing.

I am sorry, but if a “teacher” wants students to become mediocre—that person should leave school. Yesterday.

(PS: My manners do not allow me to say what I really think of that “teacher“.)

Like the teachers telling you that they never have seen so many good papers.

And then nobody get’s a grade better then B.

I wrote a paper this semester for my Ethics teacher. It was about morality and pornography. I think I went above and beyond the requirements. My classmates thought it was a great paper. It was supposed to be an opinion piece. I thought it was deserving of an A but I got a B with no explanation other than he disagreed with some of the points I made in the paper. A fellow student who wrote a marginal paper received an A.

When you turn in a paper that is of better quality, it’s almost as if some teachers develop a new scale to evaluate your work with. It’s very frustrating. I get A’s on all of my papers for all of my other classes but I cannot get above a B for this class.

    Tanya,

I agree with you, I think schools need to go ahead and do away with essay types of questionssince it is so subjective, and what may be excellent work for one professor is sub-standard for another and frankly I think its ridiculous.

I just remembered - I used to have a teacher who was proud that in 25 years she never ever gave an A. To any student. What a b***

I would tell the sudent to do 4 things:
    1. Take a red pen and give herself a a big fat “A” across the front of the paper. Then tuck it away.
    2. Write the sub-standard paper the professor wants and use the whole situation as the learning experience college is, without thinking any less of herself.
    3. Get a copy of “The Writers Market 2006″
    4. Pull out the “A” paper and present it as an article to a magazine editor listed in “The Writers Market 2006″. Get it published and get paid for the article. Move on to the next class.

Tell her the story about the economics professor, who gave a “C” for a business plan written by a student named Fred Smith. Fred used that business plan to start Federal Express. http://www.referenceforbusiness.com/biography/S-Z/Smith-Fred-1944.html
