The Wrong Kind of Bonus

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Leaders and most managers are well aware that a bonus is used to increase the productivity of employees. Mostly these bonuses are very little (I know of $50.00 paid to an employee that worked some 150 hours overtime) while others are unbelievably high und unjustified.
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates now added a new bonus to the mix: Serve longer in combat!

Wow!

Another short term fix without looking at the long-term setbacks of this decision. I am not only talking about the know medical and /or psychological problems (Walter Reed and the treatment of soldiers just being the tip of an iceberg) or the strains put on the families whose members serve. I am also talking about the ever increasing unwillingness to join the forces. The news have been full of the problems recruiters had over the past few months.

How much will this bonus will set them back?

Are you aware of the messages your bonuses are sending?
