Semler spoke at a business conference where he discussed the idea of employees being able to set their own levels of pay. Of course all the senior CEOs in the room complained that such an idea was unworkable because the employees could not be trusted to set their own levels of pay. Semler responded: ‘Isn’t that what we do for ourselves? And none of us would claim to be unfairly paid would we?’

This reminds me of back in high school where occasionally a teacher would be liberal enough to ask the students to grade themselves. The teacher usually says something like we should reflect seriously upon what kind of work we have put into the school year, and what we need improvement in. Then, when we grade ourselves, we should also be fair.
Contrary to what most people think, students don’t always give themselves As. It is a good exercise because it challenges our honesty, and we can do a thorough self-assessment of our work. Similarly, at a work place, if we get to select our own pay scale, it is not true that everyone will select the highest scale.
