Sad, very sad!

The 18-year-old author of the Sasser virus, and possibly the Netsky virus, has been offered a job by the German firewall company Securepoint. This kids also said he didn’t realize that he would cause such a mess… Oh please!

Would you want to buy a firewall from that company?

Oh heck no!

Stupidity or…?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2009

I am sure you have all heard about the blogs about CBS and Bush’s Military Record. And you know that many, if not even the majority of the blogs has their menu on the right site.

A forum I used to value (I know, I know) and read (until today) states this:
1. Menu should always be either on top or on the left side. Never on the right or only at the bottom.

then
Rules are made to be broken.

And as answer:
As far as web-design goes, rules are meant to be broken only if you want to look like you don’t know what you’re doing.
This forum was created for people who are seeking for PROFESSIONAL WEB-DESIGN advice. And there are some standards and rules that shouldn’t be broken if you want to create the right impression.

Wow!

So, all those people having the menu on the right are stupid and give the wrong impression. And all those people forcing the users to scroll down are stupid.

Gee, what do those self declared experts go on my nerves!

Dear “PROFESSIONAL WEB-DESIGNERS” lighten up!

Ever looked at pages which are nothing else then a sales letter? The majority of them has the menu at the bottom. They are stupid, right? So stupid that they sell! Go figure!

There are aesthetic reasons why a menu is at the place it is at. Historical reasons, language reasons (we are not all writing from the left to the right, right?) and many other reasons. Just going ahead and bluntly declare that as giving the “wrong impression” can give me only one impression: Insane!

Do you also try to tell us that tables are a good thing? Where and when do you end?

And since when are rules the law?

Edinburgh Fog

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2009

And another one from Graham Stewart:

What you need:
Half a pint of double cream
One ounce of castor sugar
Two ounces of small macaroon biscuits (or almond cookies, that sort of thing)
Almond essence
Drambuie liqueur to taste (If you don’t have Drambuie just replace it with some of the whisky you’ll have left over from the cranachan.)
One ounce of flaked almonds (almonds are a BIG thing in this dessert!)

What you do:
Whip the cream until it’s stiff and then fold in the sugar. Crush the macaroon biscuits and mix them really well with the cream. Add a few drops of almond essence and Drambuie liqueur (first time not too much until you get a taste for what you like). Serve well chilled.

What the heck - NUDE modeling for referrals

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2009

Just came accross a posting with this subject: NUDE modeling for referrals

NUDE is a marketing acronym:

Novelty
Utility
Dependability
Economy

Can it get any more stupid?

Are we now loosing the rest of all decency?

Just found this article at Reuters.

That’s a big one. Or isn’t it?

What do you think which impact will that have on outsourcing in general?

Cranachan

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2009

Graham Stewart sent me this recipe:

Here is the recipe for Cranachan, a traditional Scottish dish that was served at festive times, especially Halloween. The amounts here will serve 4.

Ingredients:

100g (4oz) medium oatmeal     2 tablespoons raspberry jam (jelly?)
2 tablespoons water   300 ml (half a pint) double cream
1 dessertspoon caster sugar   2-3 tablespoons of whisky
175g (6oz) fresh raspberries   icing sugar for dusting

What to do:
Toast the oatmeal until golden brown all over and leave to cool. Warm the jam with the water and, once the jam has dissolved, strain through a tea strainer or sieve to get a coulis texture.
Whisk the cream, caster sugar, and whisky together until it’s lightly whipped. Fold in the oatmeal.
Take half of the raspberries and divide them between four glasses and spoon a little of the jam coulis on top of them. Half fill the glasses now with the cranachan cream and then sit the remaining raspberries on top. Put more coulis on these raspberries and then top with more cream. Smooth the surface and lightly dust with icing sugar before serving.
You can eat it immediately or refrigerate and eat later. If doing the latter remember to put the icing sugar on just before serving.

Enjoy! I take no responsibility for any resulting health problems. ;)

Solution Jumpstart

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2009

A few days ago a friend approached me:

Their clients requested their web page producing questionnaire software being more flexible, allowing multiple pages instead of one. A junior programmer finishes the task, the software get tested and rolled out. But - what a disaster - the saving didn’t function properly! Apparently there were no specs written, no documentation at all!

Since they do most of their development with no or incomplete specs my friend was looking for an easy way to jump start. Many people find it useful to have a template handy that helps them to categorize and jump start when faced with a problem they have to solve.

German radio starts Klingon service

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2009

The German international broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) is celebrating 10 years of its online service by adding a new language to the 30 it already publishes - Klingon.

I remember this case of a court searching for a translator for Klingon, because the suspect refused to speak in any other language….
