    I’d probably say something like, “I am really surprised to hear to you that” and then sit back and listen. I believe in confronting such things at the time, but in a way that allows the person to save face (and learn). If I admire the person, it is all the more reason to bother doing so.

    What do I do - all depends on the names called and the context /situation they are “called” in.

    Anything with racial or sexual connotations I would probably say “steady on” or “that is out of order” or “you need to be careful”.

    I would feel uncomfortable - I dislike name calling and if unchecked it can veer into bullying.

    They would also loose some of my respect.

Because I value your thoughtful opinions, I encourage you to add them.
