The "free" word came up with a twist recently. I was contacted by [famous int'l TV channel] looking for music for a programme. Here's the way they presented it: no upfront fees, the composers receive payment via authors' right societies and get promotion. What they actually mean is that they don't pay at all. Composers receive rights for broadcasting paid by the channels, not fees. Thing is: one of my clients was willing to do it. So you can hardly blame people for trying.
