How old is your software?

A recent study showed that almost half of the questioned CIOs think that the software used in the company is twenty years old and older. More than 3/4 believe software is at least ten years old. Top that with the fact that most CIOs admit that documentation isn’t done or not done properly. All of these software packages are neither ready to run on phones or the newest wireless gadgets.
In many companies the budget for updating those legacy systems is too small. With that in mind one has to wonder about the short and especially long term strategy. Very often the CIO has to take the blame—without her having an influence on the strategic decisions. And sometimes—probably too often—there is no strategy at all.
