How are your projects coming along?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Ever wondered how many projects are really in the works at your company?

Well, here are three simple steps to get a better overview and get back on track:

Step 1:

Take a quick analysis with the people who claim they are running projects:

    1. How is the project named?

    2. Who is responsible?

    3. Who ordered the project?

    4. Where is the order?

    5. What is the purpose of the project?

    6. Is there a project plan with defined sub-projects?

    7. Who are the team members?

    8. Is there a budget?

    9. How much of the budget is left and what has been done?

    10. Is the project in time?

Step 2:

Now take the answers and put them either in the PM software system you are using or just in a simple spreadsheet table. Do not be surprised when the number of projects is way higher then the “official” number!

Step 3:

Now concentrate on all projects with less then 5 positive answers.

First, don’t even call them projects anymore! At best they are in planning phase. Make sure that all of these planned projects have a designated project lead. And please give the project leads the resources and responsibilities necessary to make the projects succeed.

Of course project management cost money, but in its absence, projects will cost even more!
