Formal authority can make one a manager regardless of whether one has followers.
Formal authority does not make one a leader. Leaders attract followers by walking their talking, earning the respect of others, setting high standards for themselves, driving themselves forward, and inspiring others. As it relates to leaders, the followers are not necessarily direct reports. A leader’s followers can be superiors, peers, subordinates, or even people in other organizations.
