"Frank's skill in asking the right questions is un-mistakable, and is at the core of his leadership philosophy.

The power of these questions cannot be underestimated, especially if you want to lead and not manage."

The 7-S-Model

The “7-S-Model” was developed by Tom Peter and Robert H. Waterman Jr. in the 1970’s.

To find out the success for enterprises they examined numerous large-scale enterprises. Their thought was that success and/or failure of a business are mainly determined by the employees.

Tom Peter and Robert H. Waterman Jr. developed a framework of seven characteristics:

  • Strategy—understand how the enterprise reacts to external changes.
  • Structure—how is the enterprise organized.
  • System—informal and formal business processes which have large influence on the efficiency of the organization.
  • Style/Culture—corporate culture and leadership style.
  • Staff—all aspects of personnel management.
  • Skills—the core authority of an organizational unit.
  • Shared Values—the common values that hold everything else together.

“In Search of Excellence” made the 7-S-Model known worldwide; especially the distinction between hard factors (Strategy, Structure and System) and soft factors (Style, Staff, Skills, Shared Values).

Management by Wandering Around

Tom Peters coined the phrase “Management by Wandering Around” in the book In Search of Excellence.

Managers and supervisors alike have to create and nurture an active relationship with value creating personal and activities.

To that extent it is nothing new; it just picks from the already well-known and often copied stories of successful entrepreneurs, who—even as high ranked managers—are still friends with blue collar workers and stay familiar with their workplaces.

On the other hand, managers who hide behind plans, schedules, and reports and/or do not take an active role in the project itself do not only risk the failure of a project, but substantially cause the failure.

Are you hiding?

Is your manager?

The Harzburger Model

The Harzburger model is a management and leadership model developed from the AFW Wirtschaftsakademie Bad Harzburg GmbH.

In our days the academy represents this model only fundamentally. A flexible and modular leadership model is preferred over situational guidelines based on a rather closed model.

The Harzburger model integrates these concepts:

  • Management by delegation (which often is said to be the Harzburger model)
  • Management by Exception
  • Management by Objectives

Because of the strong emphasis of personal competence and responsibility the Harzburger model is seen as very close to Management by Projects.

Management by Fist

While doing some research I came across a website talking about Management by Fist: Apparently some top managers can only deal with different opinions by using their fists. At times police is brought in to mediate.

I’d really like to see more research on this one! Who is willing to share a story?

Management by Control and Direction

An authoritarian style based on the principle to give subordinates the least competencies possible.

Used for the longest time at military.
