Disclosure of Data Mining

The Justice Department is opposing bipartisan Senate legislation that would require federal agencies to disclose to Congress data-mining programs they use to find patterns of criminal or terrorist activity, saying that it duplicates a reporting requirement mandated in the 2006 renewal of the USA Patriot Act.
One has to wonder why. Would it be really so bad to actually prove that there is no wrong doing within the data mining? And if it’s really a duplication and not something slightly different—printing the same report twice shouldn’t be a problem, now should it? Even not for those who love to micromanage…

The department, however, missed the March 9 deadline to report on its data-mining programs as required by the law.
Oh—now I understand: Having a second reporting requirement would actually ensure that they do what they are supposed to do.

If they follow the law—what are they afraid of? Costs? Please! Since when has the costs stopped the bureaucrats doing anything?The article continues:
