Protecting the Magic?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

St Tammany.com reports:

Walt Disney World in Florida nearly banned a man who looks like Santa Claus, but eventually just told him to quit telling kids in the park he was the real deal.

A Disney manager had said, “‘You need to alter your appearance’ because I was impersonating Santa Claus,” J.D. Worley tells WTVT-TV in Tampa, Fla. “I look this way 24/7, 365 days a year. This is me.”

So he no longer wore a red shirt, red hat and blue jeans. But even then, kids at the theme park asked him if he was Santa.

“How do you tell a little kid, ‘No, go away, little kid’,” Worley said.

Disney managers decided not to ban Worley from the park, but they did ask him to knock it off and stop saying he was Santa. A Disney spokesman says the park was just trying to protect the magic of Santa.

Worley left “the happiest place on earth” a little sad, he says, but he still loves Disney — and Christmas, he told WTVT Fox 13.

Worley says he has played the jolly old elf at charity events for years.

I wonder what Walt would have said about that…

How would you—as a child—feel, if the man looking like all the Santa’s you have ever seen telling you: “I am NOT Santa.”

Thank you Disney for protecting the magic. No, really.

Holiday Greeting

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

To each passing stranger
Give the gift and a smile
The joy of a kind word
Warms the soul for a while

The simplest look of kindness
No matter how short or fleeting
Brings love to each and everyone
A truthful holiday greeting

And spirits may sing
And hearts may melt
On this Christmas day
When real love is felt

Throughout a family
Amongst true friends
Here’s a wish of happiness
To all you and your kin

Merry Christmas!

May your holiday season be cheerful, comforting, and embraced by family and friends. This is the season for love and warmth, celebrating and rejoicing.

Just file ‘em!

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Sometimes in the late 80’s I was working at a business that just got their first computer. Software was on 5 1/4 floppies - like this one:
floppy
It was a flimsy floppy with 360KB storage…

The secretary was told to file away the floppies the computer came with.

So the secretary punched holes in the floppies and put them in the folder…
floppy with holes

Successful Managers Should Pay the LEAST Attention To

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

A friend of mine took an assessment test and was asked this:

Successfull managers should pay the LEAST attention to:
  • Selecting the right staff.
  • Thoroughly training all staff.
  • Setting clear goals and work standards.
  • Rewarding effective performance.
  • Weeding out poor performers.

Doesn’t that feel like one of those questions where you can’t win at all?

Isn’t it true that when a manger stops paying attention things start to fall apart?

I’d choose the first one. As a manager you are not always in a position to choose your team members. But with the others applied you can make the best even out of those you would not have chosen.

What do you think?

A Few Bucks More?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

It’s known that bribery is an important part of business; in some countries more than in others.

In some countries you are not allowed to take a bribe, but for the business it’s a taxable expense. At the moment Siemens is all over the news—an estimated € 200 million ($265 million) was supposedly put into different accounts; investigators are now talking with the top managers and board members.

Would you bribe to get a contract and enable your business to stay in business?

Do you consider it unethical to bribe?

Do you think Siemens management should have started their own investigation earlier then they did?

If you have a few minutes—take the test! It will be interesting to learn how accurate you think it was…

“Thou shalt never badmouth a competitor.”

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

If only more would be listening to either Thomas Watson or Tom Peters:
I come down hard on Mr Watson’s side. It is my goal—selfishly, actually—to be a highly regarded member of my professional community. Speaking crudely, I think that is an incredibly strong and sustainable competitive advantage. And, yes, I bloody well do want to win more than my fair share of business.

We all do—but a great many try to do so by badmouthing others. I wonder how they feel when looking in a mirror.

Do you think they have been taught the right values while they were still young?

Opt-out?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Maybe to have those who love to ask us to opt-out understand better how much they annoy us—we should start sending them bills:

You agree to pay this amount—unless you opt-out.

What do you think?

PS: Sorry, but by reading this you have agreed to pay me US$50.00… ;)
