And Who Would You Employ?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

We are all well aware of age, gender and ethnical discrimination when it comes to employment. At lot has been said and done to make it difficult for those who like to discriminate.

Two recent cases have brought another kind of discrimination to my attention: Those towards families with a very unhealthy member and those towards multi-children parents.

If all equal—would you employ the mom with five children or…?

If all equal—would you employ the spouse of a cancer patient or…?

Mmmmm Chocolate…

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

A recent market study showed that the German chocolate manufacturers have already sold 2.4% more chocolate this year than last year.

Now I wonder if the people buy more chocolate because they have fewer problems and are happy or…

And why do you eat chocolate?

Bestseller?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Here are some sobering statistics from Nielsen Bookscan, a company that in 2004 tracked the sales of 1.2 million books in the United States:
  • Of those 1.2 million books, 950,000 sold fewer than 99 copies.
  • Another 200,000 sold fewer than 1,000 copies.
  • Only 25,000 books sold more than 5,000 copies.
  • Fewer than 500 sold more than 100,000 copies.
  • Only 10 books sold more than a million copies each.
  • The average book in the United States sells about 500 copies.

(The above info is reprinted from the Levine Breaking News)

With that in mind - when would you consider a book a bestseller?

Phone Home

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

With ever rising phone costs (what happened to all the predictions that using the phone will become cheaper—even free?)—here is a valuable option:
http://futurephone.com

From their site:

How can I make International calls for free?
Simply call one of the domestic USA phone numbers from your home, office or mobile phone to be connected to our gateway. Once it answers, dial in the number you want to reach.

    Where can I call?
Use the drop down list from the home page (Available Country code and Prefix list) to access our list of 54 countries.

    Is it really FREE?
For callers that have unlimited long distance or nationwide long distance plan’s with their cell or local service provider, yes it will be FREE. If you do not have one of those plans the international long distance portion of the call is free, and you would just pay your normal rate for a domestic long distance call.

And no, I am neither an affiliate, nor do I make any money for recommending them!

Children In Need

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

From my friend Rory Woolridge:

For my sins I have released a ‘Networking Single’ ‘Have you met Miss Jones’. This was recorded in the studio after my second vocal lesson which my wife, Yvonne, had given me for my 50th birthday last year. As, like most people, I only sing in the car…It took me six months to pluck up the courage to go and sing in front of a ’stranger’. I had a great time and would recommend anyone to try singing it was an uplifting experience.

Please CLICK HERE to download a copy of the song (There is a button to donate without having to listen!!!!) Just five of your lovely pounds will secure you a ‘One Off’ experience never to be repeated… and a donation to an extremely worthwhile appeal.

Where Are The Answers?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

We all have been in those tricky situations when we need to find an answer/solution fast, but we struggle to find what we are looking for. Remember: I can’t see the forest because of all the trees…

Usually the answers/solutions are inside us. All we have to do is asking the questions that help finding them. Children have it easier—they still are curious about everything, ask questions non-stop and in general do not rely on past knowledge.

Krishnamurti said: “The day you teach the child the name of the bird, the child will never see that bird again.”

There is a memorable scene in the movie “What the bleep…” talking about the Red Indians who were not able to see the ships at the horizon. It is all about what we know and how open we are to new things; to question everything.

That’s why I am not offering any pre-defined solutions but I will ask questions that will help to find the answers which are already in the person.

Are you asking enough?

Are your questions challenging enough?

Morpheus: “You have to let it all go, Neo. Fear, doubt, and disbelief. Free your mind.”

9-2

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

The Baltimore Ravens are now 9-2; setting a new record. With a win against Cincinnati this coming Thursday, Baltimore would clinch the team’s first AFC North title and a postseason berth.

As dominant as their defense was against the Steelers—I think they have a good chance to add another great win and record :)

Managers in Court

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Basically unthinkable until a few years ago. Until then one scandal is followed by another: Enron, WorldCom, Adelphi, Siemens, Mannesmann to name just a few.

Very often the question comes up about the ethics of those managers.

Has there been a shift—or do they only have more publicity now?

Is it time to rethink what managers should be allowed to do?
