Happy Halloween!

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Bloody pig heads rolling over the road…

Bloodily, gruesome, macabre—nevertheless no Halloween joke! Two tons of bloody pig heads rolled out of a transporter on the street when the doors opened at a traffic light in Herne, Germany. The horror-film-worthy incident even tempted the police officers to poetic highs: “From hollow cheeks the pigs sneered at the other drivers.”

The Customer Is Queen/King And The Employee…?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Many companies do a lot to ensure their customers happiness. Even more claim they do so—we all have come across those companies. Interestingly enough too many companies do not treat their employees the way they want their customers to be treated. Think about it: Your supervisor just jelled at you; told you how bad a job you are doing; how stupid you are. Then the phone rings and you have to deal with a grumpy customer. Will you be very responsive to the customer’s needs or is your mind still occupied with the way your supervisor acted towards you? Odds are you will not…

Should managers treat staff the same way the company wants customers to be treated?

Do you have an employee of the month award?

Are employees recognized when they perform better than the average?

What procedures are in place to help employees that underperform?

Silence is Golden…

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

I was asked to bid on a project to pay out money to silent partners.

Excurse: A silent partner is a partner in a business who either provides money to help the business grow or can help to get contracts because of her professional position. Usually there are notarized contracts between the silent partner and the company in question.
It is obvious that giving money or other goods to a silent partner is not an easy task. Give too much and you might jeopardize the silent part; give too little and you might lose the partner.

Anyway—here the reply I got to my bid:

What companies have you worked with? Can you provide me with references?

Dang!

How would you—as silent partner—feel when you are used as a reference?

Is slavery back?

A recent job posting on an U.S. based board asked for a local well experienced Java programmer.

Compensation for one week of work: $100.00

Compensation for a month: $400.00

Being your slave: Priceless.

Par Ordre De Mufti

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

A way to describe that a decision wasn’t based on facts; knowledge; research; et cetara; just the authority of the (upper) manager.

A mufti is an expert on Islamic religious law whose rulings can’t be challenged.

Would you like to share a story ;) ?

How 25 Dollars Could Have Saved HP Big Headaches and a Lot of Money

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Stop Telling … Start Leading! - a business management book by author Frank D. Kanu identifying the deadly sins of management which hurt HP so badly.

At an U.S. House subcommittee hearing former HP board chairman Patricia Dunn testified that she initiated the investigation. She went on: “I do not accept responsibility…”

According to author and leadership consultant Frank Kanu, Patricia Dunn is guilty of committing a few of the deadly sins as described in his book:
  1. Results-Oriented Instead of Goal-Oriented
  2. Overlook Setting Goals Together With the Employees
  3. Let Everything Go Uncontrolled
  4. Nobody Takes Responsibility for the Team
  5. Demand and Encourage
  6. Ignore Standards
  7. Tolerate Negligence
  8. Ignore the Different Personalities in the Team
  9. I’m Too Busy Right Now…
  10. Making Money Is Important.
  11. Instead of Delegating You Do Everything Yourself
  12. Be Everybody’s Darling
  13. Only Give Tribute to a Chosen Few

Now we all know that just buying a book alone will not cut it. One has to do more: Listening to the advice given; understanding the reasoning behind it; questioning it; learning from it. Kanu gains inspiration by Albert Einstein: “The most important thing is not to stop questioning“.

Spending $25, some hours to read a book and a few more to start implementing the advice should be well worth way more then becoming guilty of one of the deadly sins and losing money, creditability, customers and fans/followers.

Schwester, Skalpell bitte…

Excuse me? Exactly!

Some days ago I read that health care providers are now starting to fly patients to lower income countries to “save” on the costs for expensive surgeries. Do you think they will fly you first class?

How will you feel when the surgery causes complications and you are in a foreign country surrounded by nurses and doctors whose language you do not speak. Without your family and loved ones?

This comes at the same time health care providers talking about increasing the rates. Do you feel like they are charging too much for what they offer?

Has health insurance truly become a benefit the less fortunate cannot afford anymore?

Do You Have A Complaints Department?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

More and more companies see the value to offer their customers a complaints department. After all, there is the old saying that keeping an existing customer is seven times less expensive than getting a new customer.

Still, most complaint departments are detached inside the company: Complaints stay inside the department and will not passed on.

Some companies have the rule that every employee—including upper management—has to answer the phone to handle complaints. Think they have an advantage over those who don’t?

What are you doing to keep your existing customers?
