Aesop (620 BC - 560 BC) quotes

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Better be wise by the misfortunes of others than by your own.

In critical moments even the very powerful have need of the weakest.

It is easy to be brave from a safe distance.

It is with our passions, as it is with fire and water, they are good servants but bad masters.

Never trust the advice of a man in difficulties.

Persuasion is often more effectual than force.

The smaller the mind the greater the conceit.

We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office.

What a splendid head, yet no brain.

Put your shoulder to the wheel.

Can you admit your wrong doing?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Bessemer Venture Partners put up an Anti-Portfolio:
“We chose to decline the investments below, each of which we had the opportunity to invest in, and each of which later blossomed into a tremendously successful company.” Those companies include Apple, ebay, FedEx, Google and Intel - to name just a few.

What a wonderfully bold move - especially in a time when to many think that admitting a mistake is the biggest mistake one might make. And heaven forbids to learn from it.

Can you admit your wrong doings?

Do you fear questions?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

We all have heard the story of the rather unpleasant looking guy who is married to the beauty queen. And when asked how from all men he was able to get married to her he said:
“I asked…”

A great many of us experienced first hand what happens when a student asks a question: The “teacher” get’s annoyed and either ignores the question or even worst will make the one asking looking like a fool.

But who is the real fool?

Very often we can see how people perform a task incorrectly. A simple and short question along the lines of: “What do you mean?” could have solved the problem at hand and saved time, costs and frustration.

“He who asks a question may be a fool for five minutes, but he who never asks a question remains a fool forever.”
Tom J. Connelly

We all have missed out on great opportunities because we forget that one simple question can change everything. And still many are afraid to ask questions or to go the step further to use questions for change and growth. Sometimes people tell me that I am always asking the difficult questions. But are there really any difficult or easy questions? Or is it more that we try to avoid answering; and saying: “What a difficult question” gives us an easy and fast excuse?

When was the last time you asked a question that cleared things up, lead to a change?

Are you asking enough questions?

Frank’s skill in asking the right questions is un-mistakable, and is at the core of his leadership philosophy. The power of these questions cannot be underestimated, especially if you want to lead and not manage.

What a name change can tell you about customer service

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

If you are reading my blog since a while you will have noticed that my last name changed.

I am now officially Frank D. Kanu.

Some of you might wonder about the name change. Of course there is more then just one reason. First—my beloved wife’s last name is Kanu. Yes, I am going to take her last name :) Secondly, I had a Feng Shui expert doing a research and she found out that the book will do better when using the last name Kanu. There you have it—another good reason! If you think it makes a great story for Oprah and other shows—I can still use some help to get there ;)

Little did I know about all the challenges most women go through when changing their name.

Most companies do not offer you the option to do it the easy way: Send/fax in the court document—be done. With some you have to go through the hurdles of explaining and arguing. Yes, arguing! One of the companies I called up for the last name change had a “lady” who got really upset that I changed my name.

Think they understand anything about customer service???

Do you make it easy for your customers to change their personal information?

Can You Commit?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

In his book “Think and Grow Rich” Napoleon Hill describes mastermind groups. (Leaders Gain Valuable Insights Through Mastermind Groups)

Would you consider all teams at work mastermind groups? I think some are and others aren’t: It’s all about the commitment!

Look at the great many online networks which struggle to get offline networking events running. Look at BNI and the resistance of some to commit to a weekly meeting.

Napoleon Hill ask for at least two meetings in a week.

Yes, two.

At least.

How many (mastermind) groups and teams are you now still considering a mastermind group?

Are you willing to commit to at least two meetings a week? Even during vacation and holidays?

Have you ever considered a virtual mastermind group?

Do you think it makes sense to join one of the groups which charge to become a member?
