verbal Judo

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

“What are the key principles of Verbal Judo?

The key to successfully managing confrontation is to stay calm and redirect the negative behavior. Verbal Judo uses empathy, allowing an individual to sympathize with an attacker’s feelings while not necessarily agreeing to their demands. This is accomplished by moving the conversation away from those demands and focusing on the process that created the anger in the first place. Verbal Judo allows everyone to save face, and often yields a deeper understanding of the issues that create tension. and unhappiness.”

Stupid questions?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

After witnessing a professor in the Audimax answering a student’s questions with a: “I do not answer stupid questions. Go home and learn the stuff!”. Mind you this was the first session and the students were freshmen… What do you think how many of the students felt like coming back—or asking questions?

I start all my seminars with explaining to the audience that there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers, and since I am giving the answers… A great way of breaking the ice and take away some of the fear of public humiliation many students have.

Very often you can experience that in meetings a valid question get’s used for a personal attack. And that’s the when tone and spirit changes.

We all have it experienced.

But how often did we try to change the situation?

Did the manager stood up?

Asking questions is key

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Porsche requests that every mistake that happened leads to an improvement suggestion.

Toyota requests that employees ask five why questions to analyze the cause of an error.

In meetings managers should talk less and allow questions like: “If you would be in my position—what would you do?”

When was the last you did dig deep to find the real issue?

Stop Telling… Start Leading! - Foreword

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Frank D. Kanu is the personification of the American international manager. Highly intelligent and experienced in the field of international business, he is very aware of the promise business has of bringing people closer together in the process of fulfilling the business needs of peace and understanding.

With this book, Kanu shows that managers need more than the predefined answers in daily business dealings and demonstrates how any leader can use a logical, step-by-step process to create and implement a powerful new sense of direction in his or her own organization, based on the Socratic Tradition.

Why should managers use the Socratic Method instead of simply telling employees what to do or giving them direction? What would your reaction be if you were in a situation where you had a tough challenge, or needed a clear answer to a business problem and someone just walked up to you and told you the answer? I am sure that you would feel that you have been deprived and would be annoyed and discouraged. Giving someone the answer to a problem or question is robbing them of valuable educational opportunities, because in each of us, learning happens much faster when we solve managerial problems ourselves; and when we figure something out for ourselves, we are enthusiastic to go make it happen. In this book, Kanu shows in a most effective manner how a versatile manager can become a more creative leader who does not deprive people of the joy and energy of discovery, but rather helps them to move forward by asking Socratic questions. Managers and leaders at all levels can use these proven techniques, including planning, communication, and motivational tools, to support their employees in effecting the positive changes that will make the difference in achieving their organizations’ bottom-line goals. The definitional method of Socrates is a real contribution to the logic of philosophical inquiry. It inspired the dialectical method of Plato and exerted a considerable influence on the logic of Aristotle. Readers will find this book to be an invaluable resource to which they will often return to, to revise Frank D. Kanu’s practical advice as their business grows to meet the worldwide markets of the 2lst Century.

Praise is dangerous?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

In the opinion of management consultant Fredmund Malik the daily praise is not only wrong but also dangerous. Because it de-motivates instead of motivates. Because most people have an understanding of praises for the average performance being wrong and manipulative.

Have you ever been praised and felt manipulated?

How do you praise?

frames

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

When you meet another person you make a picture of them. You frame them and expect that the image you have is correct.

How upset do you get when someone falls out of the frame you created for them?

I’ve seen friendships and even marriages brake apart because of it…

Wouldn’t it be correct to change the image you have?
