Are online communities a failure?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Being on the internet almost 20 years now I have seen the raise of a lot of communities. And their fall.

Have seen people with their thinking: “You can’t join, you are not good enough”. Which never was a good thing, because one way or another you got in anyway…

And then when it got crowded the quality went down the same way quantity went up. I think it’s an internet phenomenon.

But the worst thing of all is the censorship based upon misunderstandings. People have been kicked out because they said something someone else didn’t like. And that someone else then started to intrigue around… I have seen both sides of the conversations and none of them were pretty. People really love to overlook that being from a different culture, religion, continent makes a huge difference. And not being a native speaker in every language does no9t make things easier either. Diversity is key!

Godwin’s Law (also Godwin’s Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an adage in Internet culture that was originated by Mike Godwin in 1990 comes to mind. The law states that:

As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.

Way too often content has been deleted after people have been removed from groups. That’s censorship at it’s worst! Just imagine all your grades at school would have been changed to failure after that one test you flunked…

Open up folks!

Not everyone has the same opinion, not everyone uses words the same way. And we sure do not talk all the same way!

Kiwi

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

New Zealand’s Kiwi fruit was originally known as “Chinese Gooseberry”. The fruit was first shipped to the United States in 1962, where it was re-named “Kiwi” after New Zealand’s national bird - the Kiwi bird. New Zealand still exports large quantities of Kiwi fruit to the United States. Kiwi fruit is high in antioxidant Vitamin C and a good source of fiber, Vitamin E and Potassium.

Appreciation

When was the last time you told a loved one that you appreciate them?
This one here is for my wonderful wife—an incredible artist!
Look at this wonderful waterfall she painted on one of the walls in our house:

Waterfall painted by Ada

Ada—I love you!

Chocolate Fondue

Here is an easy one, bringing joy especially to the children:

Heat 1 pint of whipping cream in a fondue pot. Add 8 to 10 ounces of chocolate. Bitter, semi-sweet, sweet, white—the choice is yours!

Serve with fresh sliced and diced fruits, like bananas, pineapple, strawberries, raspberries…

The buzz word desaster

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Just ran across these buzz-word filled page:
Through training and team oriented development of the human capital, continuous quality improvement is embedded as a natural driver of organizational excellence.

and
Excellence is a legacy to be willed.

Do they really think that anybody understands that? Or even is willing too? Or is that just a page setup for fooling a search engine with “intelligent” content?

My first question was: What are they trying to tell me? But then I just did the smart thing—clicked away from that page!

How private is the internet?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

There is no privacy on the internet.
Get over it!

I found private e-mails on the web because one part-time employees had his company mail forwarded to his web based university e-mail account. Which - of course - got spidered by search engines. And how many people forward e-mail without even asking the originator… Or those people including 500 e-mail address in the To: or CC: just to make sure that everyone of those can then start spamming you  !

Ever searched for your phone number using a search engine? Or credit card numbers? You will be surprised about the amount of information you can find!

So - what does it mean?
Well, be very careful about what you write and which webpages you go.
A simple block in from any to any and block out from any to any in your firewall rules will go a long way.

And in case of e-mail - just make sure that you do not send it out in the first place.

Programmer oder coder?

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

Just read this posting:
I recently had a programmer ask me “what’s a blog”?

Now let’s get things straight:

Someone working with computers for a living and not knowing what a blog is can not be a programmer.

A coder - maybe. For me a coder is like the person at the writing services - you give them very detailed instructions what to do and they follow your instructions. Coders also suffer from the CP (copy & paste) syndrome.

A programmer on the other hand is on top of new technology. (S)He will tell you things like “you ought to design” and “design saves money by planning ahead” and “separate data from presentation”. Programmers try to solve problems fast, with low costs and minimized risks. They spent a lot of their time thinking (incredible, isn’t it?) and educating themselves.

Hair Color of the “Person” Icon for a User Group Becomes Gray!

© Copyright Frank D. Kanu 2000-2008

According to the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 281923 the Hair Color of the “Person” Icon for a User Group Becomes Gray If the Group Contains More Than 500 Users.

I really wonder at what value the “Person” Icon looses the hair… ;)
